Shanahan Successfully achieves Full Speed No Load milestone

Shanahan Engineering recently successfully achieved the milestone of Full Speed No-Load (FSNL) for one of the power block’s steam turbines for our client Saudi Electric Company’s (SEC) at the PP14 Combined Cycle Power Plant in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

With a total capacity of 1800 MW, SEC’s combined cycle power plant consists of two power blocks. Each block contains three gas turbine generators, three heat recovery steam generators, one steam turbine generator, and one air cooled condenser (ACC).

This project is of particular significance for Saudi Arabia’s National Grid. As they move into the summer months and their hottest weather, the requirement for power in the country will greatly increase.

Shanahan Engineering’s commissioning team, consisting of 48 personnel, have successfully achieved the milestone of Full Speed No-Load (FSNL) for one of the power block’s steam turbines. As a result, the block will soon  be handed back to SEC, operated in combined cycle mode, and delivering more power to the grid.

Our Site Lead, Mutaz Abbu, Project Manager, Ger McInerney, and the rest of the team were proud to receive the following positive feedback from SEC.

“We would like to congratulate your team for the remarkable achievement witnessed yesterday.

"This achievement shows how our team came together as one, working professionally to overcome all obstacles that came our way. This collaboration demonstrates harmony, all working under one vision and strategy to achieve the upcoming milestones in the safest way possible. You have represented our vision and strategy throughout this project.

"Our vision: commissioning the units until we reach commercial run stage before handing over.

"Our strategy: a plan of action that includes safe run and agreed decisions from all parties to reach the overall aim; closing this project safely after running ST18.

"Keep up the good work; SEC and myself are proud to work with you.” – Rakam Al-Fdamh, PP14 Project Manager, Saudi Electric Company.
